INCUBUS (1965)

DIRECTOR: Leslie Stevens
STARRING:
William Shatner and a bunch of nobodies, one of whom is named Milos Milos

Here we have a Canadian film with a low budget, a crappy plot involving demons, weird fight scenes, and William Shatner. All prime ingredients for a classic cult movie. But this one is in Esperanto. Fortunately there are subtitles, although Esperanto resembles nothing so much as a clumsy attempt to avert the wrath of a junior high Spanish teacher by adding "o" to the end of English nouns. The plot, such as it is, is as follows: A succubus named Kia gets tired of corrupting ordinary men, and goes after Marc (Shatner) who is apparently pure and innocent. (This is ironic in view of Shatner's future role as an interstellar horndog.) She falls in love with him, and her boss (the Incubus of the title) is sorely displeased with this circumstance. Hilarity ensues, including a fight between Kia and a goat. (No, it isn't pornographic, sorry.) The ending is kind of confusing; you're left not knowing whether Marc is actually dead or not. Unles you're a Trekkie, it's hardly an important issue. While the cinematography draws successfully on the groundbreaking techniques of the great European directors, the sets are beautifully eerie (in a black metal album cover kind of way), and Shatner sounds surprisingly natural in Esperanto, I wouldn't really recommend a second viewing of this film unless an intoxicant of some kind is involved.
