HOW TO MAKE LOVE LIKE A PORN STAR
By Jenna Jameson with Neil Strauss [Regan Books]

This hefty (579 pages) book by Jenna Jameson, current reigning queen o' porn, turns out to be a really interesting and illuminating book. Cowritten with Neil Strauss (who helped midwife similar books by Motley Crue, Dave Navarro, and Marilyn Manson; supposedly he's working on one with Courtney Love right now, which should be entertaining in its own right), the book is an unflinching look at her turbulent childhood, complicated adulthood, and the wreckage accumulated along the path of her step-by-step transition from a teenage stripper to one of the most visible names in contemporary porn. As with previous books co-authored by Strauss, this one includes not only text (Jenna speaking directly to the reader, with startling frankness and an even more surprising level of wit), but excerpts from her diary, family pictures, cartoons, other effluvia, and -- yes -- many, many pictures of Jenna in various states of undress. This is probably one of the more eye-opening books you'll find sitting on the library shelves, that's for sure. Aside from Jenna's intriguing presence and aforementioned frankness, the best parts of the book are when she describes (sometimes in excruciating detail) the requirements, attractions, and drawbacks of working in the porn business. Anybody interested in porn (whether as a viewer or someone hoping to making a living in the business) would be well-advised to read this. You'll learn a lot while being entertained.

SALT

SALT # 7

After a year of unavoidable delays and behind-the-scenes grief, the UK zine SALT returns... and as always, it was worth the wait. This issue includes two lengthy features -- a piece on the ongoing extreme-music event Descent (an outgrowth of the Improvised Music Forum, and held regularly at The Basement Bar in York) and a blow-by-blow account of a UK show featuring Sunn O))), Boris, and others -- in addition to interviews with Burst, Driver, the UK label Riot Season (responsible for the recent reissue of Mainliner's MELLOW OUT, originally released in the 90s on Charnel Music), Draugar, Xasthur, and Brody's Militia. Toss in some oblique artwork, wrestling mania, and a bunch of nifty reviews, and the end result is 44 pages of whole-grain goodness for only two pounds (four smackolas if you're living in the States). The surly fellow on the cover is Holger Meins, by the way. Essential zine reading.
