RAMLEH

A more "rock" oriented display of noisy guitar pyrotechnics (well, sort of) featuring the talents of Gary Mundy (guitar) and Philip Best (vocals). Interestingly enough, Ramleh originally started out as a power-electronic outfit in the vein of Whitehouse or Fall of Because; after a brief hiatus in the early 80s, Mundy and Best revived it in more of a rock vein. Ramleh and Skullflower are so closely linked that it is possible to think of them as a two-headed beast sharing the same burnt-out soul; members of Skullflower appear regularly with Ramleh and vice versa, which makes counting heads most confusing. Broken Flag is Gary Mundy's label, from which they originally began issuing cassettes and LPs, a practice that still continues today, even though they have attained a higher profile in recent years through Freek Records and Sympathy for the Record Industry. Ramleh was originally heavily influenced by Whitehouse (as were most of the bands in the Broken Flag camp) and continued in that vein through the late 80s (see the Pure label's WE CREATED IT, NOW LET'S TAKE IT OVER series) when Ramleh was temporarily retired. At that point Gary started Toll (see below), which released one album and one cassette, both hinting at a more rock-oriented direction. Subsequently Ramleh was revived and aimed in this direction as well (check out the 90s Sympathy releases).
